James Wilson and the invention of popular sovereignty
Most Americans have never heard of James Wilson.
That is remarkable.
Because few founders shaped America more deeply.
Wilson believed something revolutionary:
The people are sovereign.
Not Parliament.
Not governors.
Not states.
The people.
This seems obvious now.
It wasn’t in 1776.
Wilson helped transform the Revolution from a dispute about English rights into something far more ambitious:
Government deriving legitimacy directly from citizens.
He later helped design:
the presidency,
the judiciary,
popular sovereignty itself.
In many ways, Wilson supplied the constitutional architecture behind Jefferson’s rhetoric.
The Declaration explains why government exists.
Wilson helped explain where it gets authority.
And his answer changed the world.
